SWOT Narrative
Strengths: I am a dependable, ambitious leader who is eager to learn. Growing up with a single mother motivated me to exceed expectations. Dispelling the stereotypes of Black men in America and people with disabilities drives me to break down barriers. As an older brother, I developed natural leadership skills. My experience working as a general manager at AutoZone provided a crash course in formal leadership with high stakes. Being from a single-parent home forced me to be dependable. My love of learning and gaining new skills motivated me to obtain a terminal degree in my passion, occupational therapy.
Weaknesses: Living with a life threatening illness makes me want to accomplish as much as possible, as quickly as possible. I carry that sense of urgency in other areas, which sometimes that makes me overextended because I have underestimated challenges and time commitments. This translates to difficulty with time management. I also have a difficult time receiving criticism. I know that it is a valuable tool for growth, but I often take it personally. In addition, I overthink things. This includes everything from conversations to test questions. Lastly, I am often very direct, which can come across as abrasive.
Opportunities: I can improve my timeliness and time management by arriving class 15 minutes early. My medical routine can be difficult and sometimes unexpected challenges emerge. I can start to plan and put a time buffer into my schedule. Using a calendar more will be helpful. Creating priority lists will also be helpful. In regards to feedback, I can regularly seek it and work to implement recommendations. Lastly, I can work to actively listen before speaking. This will allow me to reflect on responses in order to not appear abrasive.
Threats: My lack of attention to detail is a treat because sometimes I miss details that may be important. Lack of time may also be a challenge. I often try to push through when I am not feeling well, but at times my end-stage renal disease symptoms disrupt my plans. Lasting, my desire to accomplish tasks quickly can threaten my ability to work effectively on group projects.
